Project Description

SLE 1097 GIZ funded SGVC in COVID-19 Crisis Time – Phase II

Welthungerhilfe is working for 14 years on the development of cocoa and coffee value chain in the district of Kenema, Kailahun and Kono focusing strongly on production, fermentation and drying of the produce for exportation of cocoa beans to international buyers in Europe. With the GIZ funded Value Chain Programme for specific commodities - cocoa, coffee, cotton, the uninterrupted and sustained functioning of value chains for export commodities in Covid-19 crisis times is addressed. Farmers will be supported to expand their production as value chain actors will be supported to assure aggregation and trading of the produce. Dry season activities for food and nutrition security are encouraged. Covid-19 prevention measures with hygiene items will be further provided.

Job Purpose

Agricultural extension officer provides consultation with farmers and agricultural businesses. In these consultations, they give talks, guidance and actual demonstration on the latest technologies related to agriculture and on how they can take advantage of such technologies.

  1. communicate to farmers about agricultural information on the cocoa value chain and natural resources, on how best to utilise the farmland

  2. promote organic farming methods in the cocoa value chain to farmers

  3. encourage use of good agricultural extension approaches such as Farmer Field School, Farmer Business School, Making Markets work for the Poor etc.

  4. foster farming and development programmes aimed at reaching marginalised farmers or those who have little access to information and extension services

  5. build the capacity of the local communities to manage their agricultural resources sustainably

  6. identify and support new farmer groups in site selection and establishment 

  7. ensure the effective and successful planning and budgeting of agricultural activities

  8. develop mutually beneficial partnerships with relevant government departments, NGOs and other institutions involved in agricultural development work in the project area

  9. participate in the baseline assessment and analysis during the project initiation phase and all other studies and documentation activities

  10. Assist with general coordination and documentation of the assigned project activities

  11. prepare and submit monthly report to HoP 

  12. draft/review/edit TORs/ implementation plans, project reports, concept notes, MOUs and partnership agreements

  13. Any other assigned task by HoP 

Experience and Education

  1. Degree/professional qualification in Agriculture

  2. Professional working experience in (I)NGO setting

  3. Experience working with community-driven development and participatory methodologies

  4. Experience representing project to partners and donors


Excellent command of spoken and written English, spoken Krio and/or Mende

Proficiency in German (as an advantage)

Computer Skills

Advanced knowledge of basic office programmes (i.e., MS Office, Excel and Word).

Excellent knowledge of modern communication technology (i.e. e-mail, Skype, Chat).
