About the Role
The Communications Manager leads strategic communications that position ChildFund as a trusted and preferred partner for donors, strategic partners, and key stakeholders. The role strengthens brand visibility, advances organizational reputation, and directly supports fundraising and resource mobilization efforts.
Working closely with program, business development, and leadership teams, the role translates ChildFund’s impact and priorities into compelling, donor-focused communications that attract, engage, and retain partners. The position plays a central role in proposal support, donor engagement, and stewardship by producing high-quality communications assets aligned with funding opportunities and partnership goals.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Public Relations, Journalism, Corporate Communications, Marketing, or a related field.
  • Equivalent relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of formal education.

Qualifications and Experience

  • 6 to 8 years of professional experience in journalism, marketing, public relations, media campaigns, nonprofit communications, or related fields.
  • Demonstrated experience producing donor-focused communications that support fundraising, visibility, and brand positioning.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and presentation skills, with the ability to translate technical and programmatic information into clear, persuasive narratives.
  • Strong understanding of development issues, child-focused programming, donor engagement, proposal packaging, and impact storytelling.
  • Proficiency in digital communications, including social media management, analytics, and content creation tools such as Canva, Adobe Suite, or Content Management Systems.
  • Analytical skills with sound knowledge of global and national development trends.
  • Established relationships with editors and journalists, particularly in-country media.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively in multicultural environments, combining creativity, project management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Fluency in English with excellent verbal and written communication skills.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Child Safeguarding

  • Remain alert to safeguarding risks and uphold ChildFund’s Child Safeguarding Policy and procedures at all times.
  • Promote safe practices in all communications products and interactions involving children and communities.

Country Office Communications Strategy

  • Implement an in-country communications strategy that showcases ChildFund’s impact through written, visual, and multimedia storytelling, aligned with the country resource mobilization strategy.
  • Align communications planning with donor priorities, funding cycles, and proposal timelines to support effective fundraising and partnership development.
  • Manage and grow ChildFund Sierra Leone’s online presence across web and social media platforms to increase visibility and engagement.
  • Identify and leverage visibility opportunities through media features, conferences, campaigns, and strategic partnerships.
  • Ensure all communications products align with ChildFund’s global brand and comply with donor standards.

Content Creation and Management

  • Create and deliver high-quality content including stories, photos, videos, infographics, and publications that demonstrate impact and strengthen relationships with donors, partners, and the public.
  • Produce and package communications assets for proposals, concept notes, donor presentations, and fundraising campaigns in collaboration with Program and Business Development teams.
  • Write, edit, and oversee the production of newsletters, annual reports, brochures, policy documents, and other publications.
  • Coach staff and local partners on capturing ethical, high-quality stories and visuals that reflect program outcomes and community voices.
  • Ensure all content complies with branding guidelines, safeguarding standards, and organizational controls.
  • Develop and maintain a content library of ready-to-use assets for donor engagement, proposals, and partnerships.

Brand, Visibility, and Representation

  • Serve as the in-country brand ambassador, overseeing digital channels, print materials, and media engagement to strengthen ChildFund’s reputation.
  • Create content for public messaging and country-level branding initiatives.
  • Raise awareness of the value and impact of major ChildFund programs through targeted media engagement.
  • Monitor and flag potential reputational risks to the Country Director.
  • Manage communications for events, workshops, meetings, and conferences.

Alliance Relationship Management

  • Provide timely updates and content for the ChildFund International website and ChildFund Alliance partners.
  • Collaborate with Program, Sponsorship, and Fundraising teams to meet reporting requirements using the SMART framework and effective storytelling that strengthens donor confidence and future funding opportunities.

Resource Mobilization

  • Develop compelling communications and marketing collateral to support proposal development, donor engagement, and fundraising initiatives.
  • Support Business Development efforts with tailored messaging, visuals, and evidence of impact for priority donors and partners.
  • Contribute to donor stewardship and visibility materials that support retention and long-term partnerships.

Internal Communications

  • Serve as an active member of the global internal communications network.
  • Support the development and delivery of internal communications initiatives that promote One ChildFund.
  • Curate and edit content for internal platforms and channels, in collaboration with senior leadership.
  • Support internal communications during crisis situations that affect organizational perception and reputation.
