POSITION TITLE: District Mentor

DIVISION: Global Health

REPORTS TO: Senior Program Officer

POSITION SUMMARY: 

The District Mentor will lead the implementation and quality assurance of maternal health interventions across 15 health facilities in Port Loko District. The role focuses on strengthening routine Antenatal Care (ANC) services, including obstetric ultrasound, anemia screening, pre-eclampsia management, and client education, in alignment with national guidelines from the Ministry of Health.

The Mentor will provide hands-on clinical mentorship, ensure effective delivery through the hub-and-spoke model, and drive continuous quality improvement using data.

 

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Clinical Mentorship and Capacity Building:

  1. Provide on-site mentorship and coaching to health workers on basic obstetric ultrasound, hemoglobin testing and anemia management, screening, diagnosis, and management of pre-eclampsia/eclampsia 
  2. Reinforce adherence to national ANC and emergency obstetric care protocols 
  3. Support skill retention through continuous on-the-job training and case-based learning

 

Program Implementation and Coordination:

  1. Oversee rollout and routine delivery of Ultrasound services, Hemoglobin screening during ANC, Pre-eclampsia screening and management and Structured maternal health education sessions
  2. Ensure effective functioning of the hub-and-spoke service delivery model
  3. Strengthen referral pathways between peripheral facilities and Port Loko Government Hospital
  4. Monitor availability, functionality, and appropriate use of equipment and supplies
  5. Support planning and tracking of outreach visits by ultrasound focal persons
  6. Ensure appropriate use of transport and operational resources
  7. Collaborate closely with District Health Management Team (DHMT) and facility in-charges
  8. Participate in district review meetings and technical coordination platforms
  9. Support facility teams to implement community sensitization activities to improve ANC uptake

 

Supportive Supervision and Quality Improvement:

  1. Conduct regular supportive supervision visits across all supported facilities
  2. Apply standardized supervision tools to assess service quality and compliance
  3. Lead clinical audits, case reviews, and quality improvement initiatives
  4. Identify performance gaps and implement corrective actions

 

Reporting:

  1. Ensure accurate documentation of services in national ANC registers and project tools
  2. Prepare and submit timely monthly and quarterly reports
  3. Promote data use for decision-making at facility and district levels

 

Support any other relevant tasks as requested by your supervisor. 

 

ESSENTIAL:

  • Professional Qualification: Bachelor’s degree or higher in Midwifery, Nursing, Medicine, Public Health, or related field
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in maternal and newborn health programs
  • Demonstrated experience in clinical mentorship and supportive supervision
  • Experience working with government health systems at district level preferred
  • Experience with ultrasound implementation in low-resource settings is an asset
