Position Overview
PIH is seeking an experienced OB/GYN physician to work in the Maternal center of Excellence (MCOE) within Koidu Government Hospital (KGH) in Kono District:

  • He/she will deliver high standards of care in Reproductive, maternal health care through clinical interventions for patients attending MCOE.
  • He/she will work closely with the Sierra Leone Ministry of health (MoH) on the development and implementation of work plans, medical education programs and initiatives to improve the quality of maternal and newborn care. 

This position has an anticipated assignment length of a minimum of 12 months. 

This is an international position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 
Clinical Care, Supervision and Accompaniment 

  • Serve as senior clinical staff of the MCOE within KGH, focused on the delivery of the highest standards of care in the inpatient and outpatient departments of the maternity. 
  • To provide accompaniment and mentorship, for resident doctors, medical officers, nurses, midwives and Community Health Officers (CHOs) from both PIH and MOH, in the areas of reproductive and maternal health.
  • To provide high-quality prenatal care to women attending the high-risk clinic. Lead and manage labor and delivery, performing both normal vaginal deliveries and operative interventions (e.g., Cesarean sections, vacuum/forceps-assisted deliveries). Collaborate with the multidisciplinary maternity team to provide clinical coverage for all the services in the MCOE and 24 hours coverage for emergencies 
  • Provide direct clinical care and manage OB/GYN cases according to local, national and international clinical guidelines, including providing surgical coverage for obstetric and gynecological cases. To contribute to the development of clinical protocols for the MCOE to deliver high standards of care.
  • Complete daily rounds in the MCOE with residents, medical officers, surgical CHOs, midwives, and nursing staff. 
  • Organize clinical sessions (including clinical cases, morbidity-mortality, literature review, etc) with residents, medical officers, students and other cadres working at the MCOE to maintain the level of the MCOE as a Training Hub Training Hub for the MCOE
  • Oversee the gynecology clinic, providing a wide range of gynecological services, including uterine fibroids, endometriosis, infertility, Cervical cancer screening, gynecology oncology, and family planning out-patient clinics. Perform minor and major gynaecological surgeries, including myomectomies, hysterectomies, laparoscopies, hysteroscopies, and cystectomies.
  • Develop and implement SGBV protocols
  • Participate and lead as senior clinician in community outreach activities for RMNCAH activities such as high-risk pregnancy screening, obstetric scans, cervical cancer screening, family planning and any other service included in the RMNCAH program planned to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality in the community. 

Clinical Education:

  • Perform clinical teaching, mentorship and capacity building of clinicians working at the MCOE, outpatient clinics, and community clinics through leading and participating in activities including teaching rounds, curriculum and training development and implementation, case reviews, and other activities 
  • Provide Ob/Gyn surgical training, mentorship, and supervision for OBGYN residents, medical officers, surgical CHOs, general surgeons, surgical trainees, for professional development, giving support for the development of Ob/Gyn skills as part of the West Africa Postgraduate College surgical training program.
  • Participate actively in the achievement of accreditation for membership and fellowship training of the West African College of Surgeons in obstetrics and gynecology.
  • Assist with and collaborate on curriculum building, implementation, and scheduling of nursing, midwifery, CHO, and physician training activities
  • Provide bedside training and education for all cadres of staff

Administration:

  • Attend weekly clinical meetings at KGH 
  • Lead MCOE morning report
  • Work closely with the Medical and Nursing Directors, RMNCAH Medical and Nursing Directors, General medicine director and PIH SL Leadership on strategic planning and budgeting
  • Work with the leadership team and RMNCAH Clinical Programs team to contribute to grant proposals and reports to current and potential donors

Education and Work Experience Requirements: 
  • MD or equivalent medical training and board certification as a specialist as a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology 
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of clinical experience since registration with at least 6-months in a low-resource health care setting similar to Sierra Leone 
  • Experience and interest in providing clinical education, training, and mentorship to medical officers and residency programs
  • Experience in advanced gynecological oncology and/or family planning programs is an asset
  • Prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT), Hepatitis B and non-communicable diseases: clinical and program management experience strongly preferred 
  • A strong commitment to social justice and health as a human right is essential in all aspects of the leadership and management 
  • Experience in public health and/or program management is a plus
  • Proficiency level of English and Krio is an asset
  • Exemplary interpersonal communication skills, verbal and written, required to effectively engaging with senior leadership, partners, and clinicians on sensitive political and confidential issues. Ability to collaborate effectively with culturally diverse staff across departments and country
  • Evidence of providing culturally sensitive and competent quality care in an extremely stressful environment
  • Proven ability to exercise good judgment, demonstrate political astuteness, and tact 
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible and effective in the face of unexpected challenges as well as the willingness to accept a standard of living that is clean and comfortable but simple
  • Humility, a sense of curiosity, and commitment to creatively tackling seemingly impossible problems
  • Ability to live in Kono District, Sierra Leone full-time in shared accommodation.
