Duties
Incumbent is responsible for research, contact and reporting assignments and promoting the commercial interests of U.S. firms in Sierra Leone. S/he provides market information and trade promotion assistance to U.S. firms in assigned industry sectors; maintains close contact with a wide range of working-level and mid-level private and public sector officials in the assigned industry sectors, and counsels visiting U.S. clients and their corresponding local representatives; is administratively responsible for providing branded commercial services including the Gold Key Service, International Partner Search, etc.); assists in research and resolution of trade complaints within the assigned industries; plans, coordinates and participates in relevant market and export promotion events; and writes standard mandatory and market reports. The position is directly supervised by the Economic Officer.
FCS Commercial Service
Engage in commercial advocacy; promote the commercial interest of U.S. firms and provide U.S. Department of Commerce branded commercial services to interested U.S. firms.
Administrative Functions
Assist with the drafting of Diplomatic Notes, Briefing Memos, biographies, cables, work orders, and response to official inquiries;
Research and Report
Monitor, research, and analyze economic developments, as well as legislative and regulatory changes relevant to business interests.
Website Maintenance and other Routine Duties
Maintain the Economic and Commercial Section’s material on the Embassy’s Internet website, with the support of the website’s
Contacts and Representation
Develop and maintain working-level contacts related to commercial, trade, and development issues with the private sector, international actors, the Sierra Leonean government, and U.S. government entities,
Serve as backup to other members of the Economic and Commercial Section, and to other sections of the Embassy as required; and to perform any other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Evaluations
- Requirements:
- EXPERIENCE: A minimum of five years of private or public sector commercial, government, development, trade, or economic experience with progressively increasing responsibilities required. Experience in consulting and advising government and/or business leaders and experience in writing and research related to the commercial sector is required.
JOB KNOWLEDGE: Position holder must have a thorough knowledge of Sierra Leonean economic, commercial and political structure, institutions and culture.
- Education Requirements:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Marketing, International Relations, or Business Administration or related field required. Postgraduate study in any of the above fields is required.
- Evaluations:
- LANGUAGE: Fluency in speaking/reading/writing English which may include the ability to translate. This may be tested.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Must be able to establish and maintain contacts with individuals in the public and private sector; be able to give objective advice most especially on intonation gathered from published sources of data whether they are reliable or incomplete; have good interpersonal and representational skills. and must be familiar with MS Office packages such as excel, word, PowerPoint etc.
