Main responsibilities of the position

Performing autonomously and following up, the preventive maintenance and correct repair of the medical equipment in Kenema Hospital and ensuring that  user maintenance and cleaning are done properly according to Ministry of Health or manufacturer procedures.
Accountabilities

  • Performing and carrying out, all necessary complex / advanced installation, maintenance and repair of medical equipment and ensuring that as few items are out of service at any given time. This includes the following tasks:
    • Organizing and participating in the installation of medical equipment
    • Following the schedule and carrying out preventive and curative maintenance works for the equipment according to manufacturer’s protocols, manuals, and recommendations and ensuring that cleaning and simple maintenance are properly carried out by medical staff
    • Reporting any issues or problems on medical equipment to his/her supervisor and proposing solutions (training of staff on a device, operating procedures, etc.). If maintenance work requires further assistance, documentation or additional tools, this shall be requested from and provided by his/her supervisor.
    • Participating in organising user training where required.
  • Managing the stock of consumable items, filling in the stock cards, carrying out physical stock inventories, executing orders necessary for renewing stock, avoiding any shortage
  • Keeping working area clean and tidy.
  • Ensuring that all record sheets and books related to maintenance are always completed (including date of intervention, replaced parts, problems and solutions) and preparing needed reports before and after any repair or required maintenance
    Plan and follow a preventive maintenance plan for the hospital Medical Equipment according to the Ministry of Health guidelines. 
  • Troubleshoot and perform corrective maintenance on all hospital medical equipment in case of breakdowns.
  • Track equipment movement between wards and the backup room, and update status into an appropriate inventory. 
  • Monitor oxygen cylinder exchanges, organize refilling, and ensure that sufficiently filled cylinders are always available.
  • Conduct daily ward rounds to check medical equipment and follow up using the ward handover checklist books.
  • Respond to calls from users, provide technical support, and keep the line Manager informed.
  • Conduct user trainings for medical staff on the safe use of medical devices when required.
  • Liaise with contractor engineers for preventive maintenance (PM) and repairs of equipment under their responsibility (e.g., GeneXpert, Sysmex and other specialized medical devices).
  • Support the outreach team by providing technical assistance and conducting basic user training for outreach nurses on specific devices.
  • Perform other related tasks as requested by the line manager, ensuring proper follow-up and reporting.

Requirements

Education
  • Diploma as Biomedical technician preferred.
  • Diploma as mechanical/electronic/electrical technician.
  • Demonstrable technical skills for preventive and corrective maintenance.   
Experience
  • Experience in a technical field. (Minimum 2 years’ experience)
  • Pedagogical skills are an asset
