VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT 

Jhpiego is an international, non-profit health organization affiliated with Johns Hopkins University. For 40 years  and in over 155 countries, Jhpiego Corporation has been providing technical support to the Ministries of Health  in partner countries across the globe for the past 40 years in a variety of technical areas including cervical  cancer treatment and prevention, community health, HIV and AIDS, maternal and newborn health, health  workforce capacity development in-service, malaria, and IPC/WASH.  

MOMENTUM Country and Global Leadership (MCGL) is part of a suite of innovative awards funded by the  U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to holistically improve maternal and child health (MCH) in  partner countries around the world. The project focuses on technical and capacity development assistance to  Ministries of Health and other country partners to improve health outcomes.  

In Sierra Leone, Jhpiego supports the Government of Sierra Leone at the national and district level in capacity  building and technical assistance to contribute towards improving maternal and newborn and child health. A  significant area of focus for our work is accelerating and strengthening the technical and operational capacity  of local healthcare workers to reduce maternal and newborn and child deaths and provide quality services 

We are currently looking for suitable candidates to fill the following position: 

 

 Child Health and Nutrition Technical Officer x 3

– Locations: Three Districts – Bo, Pujehun and Port Loko  

– Contract Duration: Eight (8) months 

Job Overview 

The Technical Officer will be responsible for overseeing implementation in all facilities in their operational  districts. S/he will work closely with under the guidance of Child Health and Nutrition Quality Improvement  Coordinator and Senior Program Manager. Work closely with district Quality Improvement, Child Health &  Nutrition and Immunization focals to tailor assistance based on facility and district needs. The person selected  for this position will actively participate in district Child health and nutrition implementation and strategy  discussions including planning and progress reviews with other stakeholders, as appropriate. The Technical  Officer will also play an important role at district level, providing technical assistance to strengthen and scale  up child health services including IMNCI, ETAT, Immunization, and Nutrition services such as Growth  monitoring, MYICAN, and IMAM services. S/he will ensure that MCGL’s programs implement national  guidelines and standards in the provision of quality Child health, immunization & nutrition services at facility  and district level. She/he will support the district team in the development of regional quarterly and annual  reports on child health, immunization and nutrition. 

Responsibilities 

  • Provide district level technical leadership, capacity development, and supervision to and health workers on child health, nutrition, and immunization activities 
  • Assist in the assessment of clinical training needs of the district and in the design and implementation of appropriate measures to address those needs 
  • Work with the DHMT to develop and support a pool of mentors and trainers on IMCI, ETAT, IMAM, MYICN, and growth monitoring. 
  • Support DHMTs, regional/district trainers and mentors to offer on-the-job training and mentorship to healthcare workers on IMNCI, ETAT, IMAM, MYICN, and growth monitoring, services based on nationally and/or internally proven approaches 
  • Support in conducting periodic intensification of routine immunization  
  • Work with the M&E team to monitor the monthly performance of child health and nutrition interventions
  • Ensure performance and quality improvement approaches in clinical sites as approved by MCGL and the MOH 
  • Develop and facilitate the implementation of a quality assurance model at the district and facility level
  • Identify and disseminate best practices and new technical strategies and approaches in areas of expertise 
  • Ensure implementation of evidence-based clinical training materials and standards, supervisory systems and other approaches 
  • Provide technical oversight and ensure appropriate support and preparation for training activities
  • Provide technical support to program staff to create a linkage between Community Health Workers (CHW) and health facility staff in the program areas and create sustainable mechanisms
  • Ensure compliance with USAID and Jhpiego operational policies and regulations, including on clinical practices 
  • Perform other duties as directed by the senior staff 

 

 

Required Qualifications 

  • Advanced degree / Advance diploma in public health /community Medicine and Community Health / Nursing  
  • Three to five years of work experience in Child Health and Nutrition programmes.
  • Be an excellent classroom trainer with at least two years’ experience in clinical training on, IMNCI, ETAT, IMAM, MYICN 
  • Ability to provide clinical mentorship, coach and develop technical capacity in service delivery programs and technical staff in the areas of Child Health, Nutrition, and performance and quality improvement 
  • Experience working in the private sector/NGOs 
  • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing capacity-building programs for improving service delivery 
  • Experience managing quality assurance 
  • Proven leadership and management skills with the ability to multi-task 
  • Self -management is necessary (i.e. motivation, dealing with pressure, adaptability).
  • Ability to communicate effectively, instilling trust and confidence. 
  • Be cooperative, competent, hardworking, flexible and dependable
