DURATION: 1 year with possibility of extension (Maximum of 10days per month)

LOCATION: Freetown, with travels to Bo

POSITION TITLE: Clinical Mentor

DIVISION: Global Health

REPORTS TO: Senior Program Officer

POSITION SUMMARY: 

The Clinical Mentor will be responsible for strengthening the capacity of healthcare workers (midwives, nurses, etc.) in delivering high-quality, life-saving maternal and newborn care. The role is primarily focused on providing hands-on supportive supervision, coaching, and on-the-job training in key areas of obstetric and neonatal emergencies to reduce maternal and newborn mortality and morbidity.

 

The mentorship will be intensively focused on the following clinical areas:

  1. Essential Newborn Care (ENC): Immediate care after birth, thermal protection (Kangaroo Mother Care/KMC), breastfeeding support, infection prevention, and identification of danger signs.
  2. Management of Bleeding After Birth (Postpartum Haemorrhage – PPH): Active management of the third stage of labour (AMTSL), prompt recognition and management of PPH, including non-surgical techniques, uterotonics, and fluid management.
  3. Newborn Resuscitation (e.g., Helping Babies Breathe): Rapid assessment, bag and mask ventilation, and post-resuscitation care for asphyxiated newborns.

 

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Clinical Mentorship and Coaching:

  1. Provide direct, side-by-side clinical mentorship to facility staff in the labour ward, maternity unit, and post-natal ward during routine and emergency cases.
  2. Conduct competency-based assessments to identify clinical skills and knowledge gaps among staff in the key focus areas.
  3. Model best clinical practices, ensuring adherence to the Sierra Leone Ministry of Health (MoH) and international protocols for Essential Newborn Care (ENC) and Basic/Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC/CEmONC) signal functions.
  4. Facilitate regular, short, on-the-job training sessions, case reviews, and skills drills (e.g., PPH drills, newborn resuscitation simulation) in the clinical setting.

 

Supportive Supervision and Quality Improvement:

  1. Conduct regular supportive supervision visits to target facilities, focusing on clinical practice, documentation, and the functionality of essential equipment/supplies.
  2. Work collaboratively with facility leadership and staff to establish and implement quality improvement (QI) initiatives related to maternal and newborn care.
  3. Support the accurate and complete use of clinical documentation tools (e.g., partographs, patient registers).
  4. Provide constructive, timely, and respectful feedback to staff on their clinical performance and document progress.

 

Reporting:

  1. Maintain detailed records of mentoring sessions, competency assessments, and staff progress.
  2. Compile and submit accurate, timely monthly and quarterly reports to the supervisor, highlighting achievements, challenges, and recommendations for programmatic adjustments.

 

Support any other relevant tasks as requested by your supervisor. 

 

ESSENTIAL:

  • Professional Qualification: Registered Nurse, Midwife, or Clinical Officer with current professional registration in Sierra Leone.
  • Experience: A minimum of 4-5 years of clinical experience in maternity/paediatric unit, with demonstrable expertise in Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care.
  • Training: Certified trainer/experienced provider in relevant life-saving courses, such as: BEmONC/CEmONC (Basic or Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care), HBB (Helping Babies Breathe)
  • Mentorship Skills: Proven experience in providing hands-on clinical training, mentorship, or supportive supervision to healthcare staff.
  • Knowledge: Deep understanding of the Sierra Leone National Maternal and Newborn Health protocols and guidelines.

  • Project HOPE employees work in the global health field and may be required to travel or work in countries where working conditions are classified as “hardship”.
