The organisation is well recognized as a key actor in both humanitarian/emergency response (civil war, Ebola virus epidemic 2014-2016, and COVID-19 pandemic) and now in a more development setting. Action Against Hunger currently plays a strong role in Health System Strengthening, working on national level policies and plans, building capacities national and district levels to deliver improved services. Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation has also become a central element of Action Against Hunger interventions in the country. Due to Sierra Leone’s vulnerability to climate change, seen through changing rain patterns and increasing incidence of major floods and landslides, Action Against Hunger works to increase local community resilience to climate related shocks through dissemination of knowledge related to climate resilient agricultural practices and sustainable land management, and increased access to meteorological information. THE NUCAMPS PROJECT The Nutrition-sensitive Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Program (NuCAMPS) aims to improve food security and nutrition for vulnerable populations in Bonthe, Falaba and Moyamba districts of Sierra Leone, particularly women and children, by promoting climate-smart agricultural practices, enhancing access to diverse nutritious foods, and adopting sustainable energy solutions. YOUR POSITION AND RESPONSIBILITIES Under the supervision of the Consortium Coordinator, you will be the technical lead of one of the result areas of the NuCAMPS project, providing technical oversight on mangrove restoration, woodlot establishment, clean energy promotion, and climate mitigation actions to enhance environmental sustainability and community resilience More precisely, your missions will be to: Mission 1: Technical Leadership and Strategic Direction - Lead the development and implementation of the environmental and conservation components of the NUCAMPS program.
- Ensure that environmental protection, climate change mitigation and adaptation, and resilience strategies are scientifically and technically sound, context-specific, and gender-responsive.
- Oversee technical guidance to implementing partners on mangrove restoration, community woodlots, and energy-efficient cookstove initiatives.
- Promote ecosystem-based adaptation approaches and integration with WASH, FSL, and Nutrition activities.
- Contribute to national policy dialogue and advocacy efforts around climate and environmental governance.
Mission 2: Program Design and Planning - Lead and support field assessments to identify intervention sites and ecological restoration needs.
- Collaborate with local authorities, communities, and CSOs to design inclusive conservation plans.
- Support the development of technical proposals, environmental baselines, and feasibility studies for project areas.
- Identify areas of synergies with other countries and regional climate and environment programs
Mission 3: Program Implementation and Quality Assurance - Provide continuous field-level supervision and remote technical support to implementing partners.
- Ensure activities align with national environmental standards and are community-led.
- Monitor the implementation of restoration activities and energy initiatives, ensuring measurable climate mitigation impact.
- Promote use of nature-based solutions and environmental safeguards.
Mission 4: Monitoring, Learning and Innovation - Work with MEAL and technical teams to define key environmental indicators and ensure quality data collection.
- Lead documentation of best practices, lessons learned, and community innovations in ecosystem restoration and climate action.
- Drive technical reviews, reflection workshops, and field exchange visits across districts.
Mission 5: Stakeholder Engagement and Coordination - Represent Action Against Hunger/Consortium in environmental working groups, climate change platforms, and forestry networks at district and national levels.
- Liaise with ministries (e.g., EPA-SL, Ministry of Environment, and Forestry Department) and other stakeholders to align project goals.
- Support cross-sectoral collaboration within the consortium and with national institutions.
Other Key task(s) • Comply with all Action Against Hunger policies including Safeguarding YOUR PROFILE - A Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Forestry, Climate Change, Natural Resource Management, or related field. A Master degree will be an advantage.
- At least 5 years’ experience implementing community-based environmental or climate projects.
- Demonstrated technical expertise in mangrove or coastal restoration, agroforestry, climate mitigation, or clean energy promotion.
- Experience working with local government, CSOs, and community-based organizations.
- Familiarity with Sierra Leone’s environmental regulatory frameworks and climate adaptation policies.
- Ability to lead partner capacity-building and train field teams on environmental methodologies.
- Strong technical writing and reporting skills.
- Project management and coordination experience.
- Knowledge of participatory approaches and community engagement.
- Strong interpersonal, facilitation, and communication skills.
- Fluent in English and local language(s) knowledge is an asset.

YOUR EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS - Starting Date: March 2026
- Location: Falaba with regular travel to Bonthe (Mattru Jong) District and Freetown
- 12 months fixed term contract with possible extensions
- Basic salary: Based on Action Against Hunger’s salary scale and according to experience
- Monthly Transport Allowance: 30% of basic salary
- Monthly Housing Allowance: 25% of basic salary
- Seniority Bonus: 3% of the basic salary after 1 year of service
- Annual Leave Allowance: 30% of annual basic salary
- Medical coverage: Including spouse and four children under the age of 18 years
