ABOUT US :

SOLTHIS is a global health NGO created 20 years ago that works for prevention and access to quality care for all by strengthening health systems and services in a sustainable manner. We work on women’s, maternal and child health issues, and on major pandemics such as HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. SOLTHIS is a development NGO, present in West Africa with 5 country offices, which in partnership with local actors and deploy projects including operational research, capacity building and advocacy.  

 

To carry out our project in Sierra Leone, we are looking for a:  

        Junior Medical referent 

 

Place of assignment: Bo 

Type of contract: Full time  

Duration of contract: 1-year renewable 

Availability: By 15 May 2025 

 

 

BACKGROUND :

Free TB is a three-year Expertise France-funded project to be implemented in the Bo district by SOLTHIS in partnership with National Leprosy and Tuberculosis Control Programme (NLTCP); Lincoln International Institute for Rural Health (LIIRH), and the Civil Society Movement Against Tuberculosis Sierra Leone (CISMAT-SL). The project goal is to contribute to the reduction in childhood mortality from tuberculosis by delivering an available, feasible, cost-effective, and decentralized childhood tuberculosis diagnostic approach to enhance case-finding and access to treatment. More specifically, the project aims to improve TB diagnosis, access to treatment and prevention in children under 5 years old in Bo district through the implementation of an operational decentralized strategy. Through a comprehensive geographical approach aiming at covering the entire Bo district, the project will target all public health facilities of the district at the different levels of Sierra Leone’s health care system pyramid: at the primary care level, the chiefdoms are served by Community health Centre, then sections are served by Community health post (CHP) and at the lowest is the village level served by Maternal & Child health post (MCHP). The project will have strong operational research dimension.    

  

JOB OBJECTIVES :

Under the direct supervision of the Senior Medical Referent, he/she will provide technical will participate in training management and for community and healthcare staff. 

 

SPECIFIC TASKS 

Project implementation

  • Assists the Senior Medical Referent in training healthcare staff, community health workers, and other stakeholders involved in TB diagnosis and management.
  • Supports the implementation of the decentralized TB diagnostic approach at health facilities, ensuring adherence to project protocols and Good Clinical Practices (GCP).
  • Monitors patient and sample workflows at project sites and recommend improvements for efficiency.
  • Collaborates with field teams to organize and oversee the recruitment of participants for the project studies.
  • Provides technical support to healthcare workers in community and clinical settings.

Operational research

  • Participates in data collection, ensuring accuracy and compliance with ethical guidelines.
  • Collaborates with the Senior Medical Referent to identify gaps in service delivery and contributes to solutions that align with operational research objectives.
  • Assists in preparing and managing documents, procedures, and forms required for research activities.

Monitoring and reporting

  • Collects, organizes, and reports medical data to the Senior Medical Referent for project monitoring and evaluation purposes.
  • Contributes to the preparation of reports for internal use and external stakeholders, including project donors and ethics committees.
  • Participates in regular team meetings to discuss progress, challenges, and updates.

Community engagement

  • Fosters strong partnerships with local health authorities, healthcare providers, and community leaders.
  • Supports community sensitization efforts to improve awareness of childhood TB diagnosis and treatment.

 

PROFILE REQUIRED 

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing sciences or any medical related diploma

 

Experience

  • At least 2 years of experience in communicable diseases, preferably TB control.
  • Previous experience in capacity-building or training healthcare workers is advantageous.

Skills and attributes

  • Strong understanding of TB diagnosis and management in resource-limited settings.
  • Familiarity with operational research principles and Good Clinical Practices (GCP).
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to work with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proficiency in English (spoken and written).
  • Ability to work under supervision while demonstrating initiative and problem-solving skills.

  • Flexibility to travel within the Bo district for site visits and community engagements.
  • Commitment to maintaining ethical standards and confidentiality in all aspects of the project

PAY: 

Salary: Depending on experience in a similar position, according to the SOLTHIS salary scale
