LABORATORY TECHNICIAN JOB ADVERT.

Position: Laboratory technician

Reports to: Laboratory team lead/Senior lab technician

Job Summary

The Laboratory Technician is responsible for conducting laboratory tests and procedures, ensuring accurate and timely results to support the healthcare services provided at Aberdeen Women’s Centre. The technician will maintain laboratory equipment, follow safety protocols, and assist in maintaining quality assurance within the laboratory.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Explain specimen collection procedures to patients and collect samples according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Preparation of Laboratory reagents and stains according to the SOPs. 
  • Keep the laboratory environment safe and secure for the staff and other laboratory users.
  • Perform quality control and calibrate equipment if necessary 
  • Process and test laboratory specimens, interpret results and ensure quality of laboratory results according to SOPs using a range of automated equipment and manual techniques, in a timely manner.
  • Carry out routine maintenance on equipment and report unresolved performance issues to the laboratory team leader in a timely manner.
  • Track and maintain laboratory reagents, chemicals and consumable stock levels
  • Evaluates test results, makes recommendations and communicates critical test results 
  • Participate in the implementation of laboratory quality management systems
  • Any other duties assigned by the supervisor

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Medical Laboratory Science or a related field.
  • Previous experience in a clinical laboratory setting is preferred.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety standards and protocols.
  • Proficiency in laboratory techniques and equipment operation.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work under pressure.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

 

Working Conditions:

  • The position may require extended hours and the ability to handle potentially hazardous materials.
  • The Laboratory Technician will be expected to adhere to safety regulations and protocols at all times
