Our Work In Sierra Leone:

Partners In Health (PIH) began supporting the government of Sierra Leone in response to the Ebola epidemic in October 2014. Recognizing the large need for continued investments in the health system after Ebola, PIH is committed to long-term health system strengthening in support of the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MOHS), guided by the same principles as our emergency response and our work around the world: public sector accompaniment, integrated and comprehensive services, social justice, nimbleness and flexibility, partnership, community ownership, and evidence-based interventions. In the aftermath of the epidemic, PIH is committed to supporting the delivery of comprehensive health services in Sierra Leone, from the community level to the health center and to referral hospitals.

Position Overview
A State Registered Nurse (SRN) generally applies his/her medical knowledge and skills to the diagnosis, prevention, and management of patients that flow into the Koidu Government Hospital and any of the Partners in Health-affiliated health facilities.

He /she does this thoroughly, following the principles of inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultation wherever applicable to find out the actual cause of the disease and utilizing the appropriate laboratory work. He/she should consult the clinical provider for discussion on the patient’s care plan in some critical cases, respecting patients’ privacy and confidentiality as much as possible. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Assessing, monitoring, and recording patients’ symptoms and changes presented by patients
  • Developing or contributing to patient care plans based on their needs and diagnoses
  • Administering medications and treatments as prescribed by the consultants/providers
  • Ensures doctors’ ward rounds are carried out and are part of the rounds
  • Educating patients and their families on their illness status, explaining post-treatment home care needs
  • Providing emotional support and mental health care to patients and their families
  • Ensuring the safe and efficient use of medical equipment in the unit
  • Supervising and training less experienced nurses or healthcare support staff in the unit
  • Precept nursing students in the ward
  • Maintaining a clean and safe working environment in compliance with healthcare procedures and IPC regulations
  • Performing other duties relating to the role, department, or project as may be required by the nursing manager or departmental lead.

Education and Work Experience Requirements 
    • Diploma in nursing.
    • 1-3 years of clinical experience, practicing in a hospital setting. 
    • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written. 
    • Pursue attention to detail. 
    • Commitment to social justice and health care as a human right.
    • Ability to live and work full-time in Kono District, Sierra Leon
  • Must be at least 18 years’ old
