Position Overview
The Pharmacy Technician supports safe, efficient, and uninterrupted medication services for inpatient maternity, neonatal, surgical, and emergency care. Working under the supervision of a Licensed Pharmacist, the technician is responsible for in and out patient dispensing, medication room and cart management, discharge medication preparation, controlled medicines handling, and inventory control using OpenBoxes and the EMR. The role ensures accurate documentation, secure storage, and timely availability of medicines while supporting clinical teams and promoting rational drug use.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Inpatient Medication Management
  • Support continuous (24/7) inpatient pharmacy operations, including night duties, weekends, and on-call coverage as scheduled.
  • Prepare, package, and dispense patient-specific medications based on approved prescriptions.
  • Assist with daily reconciliation of medication use against documentation to ensure accuracy and accountability.
  • Print medication labels and prepare medicine administration forms to support safe dispensing.
  • Ensure emergency medication supplies are available during periods when a Pharmacist is not on-site.
  • Pharmacy, Medication Room & Cart Stocking and Control
  • Restock Pharmacies, inpatient medication rooms and medication carts according to approved stock lists and minimum/maximum levels.
  • Conduct routine physical counts and maintain accurate inventory records.
  • Ensure proper storage conditions, cleanliness, security, and controlled access to all medication rooms and carts.
  • Maintain accurate records of stock, including quantities, batch numbers, and expiry dates.
  • Account for and document wastage of unused medications and consumables from wards.
  • Controlled Medicines & High-Risk Items
  • Ensure all controlled medicines, including narcotics, are securely stored in locked cabinets or boxes.
  • Adhere strictly to documentation, verification, and accountability procedures for controlled and high-risk medications.
  • Participate in routine checks, audits, and reconciliations as required by policy.
  • Discharge Medication Preparation
  • Prepare discharge medication packets based on approved orders and designated dispensing times.
  • Accurately label, organize, and package discharge medications for patient use.
  • Coordinate with ward and clinical staff to ensure timely delivery of discharge medications to patients.
  • Provide basic medication information to patients to support safe use and storage, as directed by the Pharmacist.
  • Inventory Management & Supply Chain Coordination
  • Maintain pharmacy inventory by monitoring stock levels and anticipating medication and supply needs.
  • Record inventory adjustments in OpenBoxes for discrepancies, expiries, damages, or losses.
  • Place and follow up on routine and emergency medication orders; verify deliveries and remove expired or damaged items.
  • Liaise with the warehouse and hospital stores to ensure timely supply of medicines and materials.
  • Produce and submit monthly consumption and inventory reports as required.
  • Documentation, Reporting & Supervision
  • Maintain confidential, accurate, and up-to-date pharmacy records.
  • Collect, organize, and evaluate patient medication information to support safe therapy.
  • Effectively supervise and support Pharmacy Assistants as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as reasonably requested by the Pharmacy Supervisor or clinical teams.
Education and Work Experience Requirements: 
  • Diploma in Pharmacy.
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in a similar hospital or clinical pharmacy role.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills, with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to work professionally with multicultural teams.
  • Interest in social justice and health care delivery.
  • Computer literacy, including experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and electronic inventory or medical record systems.
  • Must not hold dual employment.
