Position Overview
The Operating Theatre Supervisor is responsible for the day-to-day coordination, supervision, and management of all activities within KGH operating theatres (2 main and 3 maternity), including the CSSD. The role ensures the smooth and efficient running of surgical services, adherence to clinical and safety standards, optimal resource utilization, the provision of high-quality patient care, and requires exceptional leadership abilities, In order to be successful for this position, the candidate must be an experienced perioperative nurse with prior experience as a theatre manager/supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 
Clinical oversight (35%): 

  • Ensure the highest standards of patient care and a safe environment.
  • Ability to scrub, circulate, lead WHO checklist briefings and guide recovery care when necessary.
  • Monitor and enforce adherence to international, national and hospital policies, procedures, and accreditation standards.
  • Monitor the utilization of the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist 
  • Ensure strict adherence to surgical aseptic techniques, sterilization protocols, and compliance with infection prevention & control standards within the operating theatres.
  • Participate in quality improvement and risk management activities.
  • Ensure the highest standards of sterile processing of instruments and supplies by the CSSD in line with the Sierra Leone National IPC Guidelines (2021), WHO Sterilization & Decontamination Standards, and AORN Central Sterile Processing recommended practices.
  • Investigate and report clinical incidents or equipment failures promptly and institute corrective actions.

Leadership and staff management (30%): 

  • Lead, motivate, and support a multidisciplinary team of perioperative nurses, nurse anaesthetists, CSSD technicians and support staff, acting as a role model.
  • Participate in surgical departments’ management meetings and contribute to service improvement initiatives.
  • Develop staff rosters, manage leave, and ensure adequate staffing coverage across the theatres.
  • Provide mentorship and training for staff development and professional growth.
  • Conduct performance appraisals and address staff concerns or disciplinary issues in collaboration with HR.
  • Participate in the development and review of organizational policies, protocols, and budgets related to surgical services

Operational coordination (35%): 

  • Plan and organize the day-to-day running of the operating theatres to ensure efficient patient flow, minimize cancellations, and coordinate with surgical teams.
  • Supervise daily theatre operations, ensuring timely start and completion of surgical lists in all theatres.
  • Allocate staff and resources to meet service demands in all theatres.
  • Communicate effectively and coordinate with surgeons, anesthetists, and nursing teams to ensure efficient theatre schedules.
  • Monitor and manage the availability, maintenance, and sterilization of surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Ensures accurate documentation, including patient records, theatre logs, and incident reports.
  • Manage theatre supplies, consumables, and inventory to minimize wastage.
  • Assist in budgeting and procurement for equipment and consumables.

Education and work experience requirements:

  • Registered nurse/midwife with a valid license (required).
  • Masters’ or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and Higher diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Perioperative care (required).
  • Minimum 10 years of perioperative experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or leadership role and mentorship (required).
  • Strong knowledge of the Central sterilization supply unit (CSSD) operations and work flows
  • Strong knowledge of surgical procedures, infection control, and theatre management systems.
  • Prior experience working a low-resource setting
  • Experience with electronic medical records and use of data management software like Excel
