Position Overview
  • The WASH Technician is responsible for maintaining and supporting all Water Sanitation Hygiene (WASH) systems within the healthcare facility. This includes ensuring reliable water supply, safe sanitation infrastructure, functional plumbing systems, and compliance with hygiene and infection‑prevention requirements. The role involves conducting routine inspections, performing basic repairs, monitoring water quality, and responding to WASH‑related issues to ensure a safe, clean, and health‑protective environment for patients, staff, and visitors. 
  • Support in the implementation, monitoring, maintaining, and trouble-shooting of Water Sanitation Hygiene activities and infrastructure in order to improve health and living conditions of the target population.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Ensuring maintenance of the WASH structures and when applicable, of the medical facilities.
  • Support operation of chemical dosing and simple water treatment systems.
  • Inspect and maintain wells, pumps, water tanks, pipe networks, and valves.
  • Repair leaks, unblock pipes, and maintain sinks, taps, toilets, and showers.
  • Conduct basic water quality tests (pH, turbidity, chlorine).
  • Monitor drainage, sewer lines, grease traps, and septic tanks.
  • Keep records of inspections and report faults promptly.
  • Maintain detailed logbooks with readings, maintenance tasks, and anomalies.
  • Report any WASH‑related incident immediately to the EVS Manager.
  • Ensure compliance with national water quality and public health standards.
  • Verify spare parts inventory and maintain emergency water supply readiness.
  • Participate in reviews of SOPs and preventive maintenance schedules
Education and Work Experience Requirements: 
Education 

  • Certificate or Diploma in Plumbing, Water Technology, Mechanical Engineering, WASH, Public Health or related field.

Experience

  • 1–3 years in WASH operations, plumbing, or water system maintenance.
  • Healthcare WASH experience is an added advantage.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong technical knowledge of pumps, valves, treatment systems, and distribution networks.
  • Ability to perform water quality tests.
  • Knowledge of IPC standards in healthcare settings.
  • Problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain accurate maintenance and water quality records.
  • Strong initiative and self-motivated, with a strong commitment to teamwork and humanitarian principles.
  • Disciplined flexible, enthusiastic, and willing to learn from others.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships in a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Energy and stamina to withstand long working hours and often stressful conditions.
  • Having fast analytical skills for risk assessment and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Interest in social justice, healthcare, and a preferential option for the poor.
  • Previous experience in WASH within hospital setting.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness.
  • Ability to follow instructions, work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good time management and organizational skills.
