Position Overview
The Carpenter position is responsible for installation, repair, and maintenance of hospital furniture and fittings, including aluminum windows, wooden and metallic doors, ceilings, drawers, cabinets with their accessories, and general woodwork services to the Maternal Center of Excellence (MCOE) and KGH hospitals. This role requires strong technical skills, adaptability, and the ability to work independently as a unique carpenter at MCOE and KGH.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 
Duties & Responsibilities. 

  • Install, repair, and maintain wooden & aluminum windows, ensuring they are securely fitted and weatherproof; 
  • Fabricate, install, and repair wooden and metallic doors, including door frames, locks, hinges, sweepers, handles, and door closers; 
  • Conduct repairs needed to the installed ceilings; 
  • Build and repair wooden & aluminum drawers and cabinets for hospital offices, wards, laboratories, and pharmacies; 
  • Assemble, repair, and refurbish hospital furniture such as beds, examination tables, benches, desks, curtain rods, and shelves; 
  • Conduct routine inspections of all carpentry-related fixtures across the hospital to ensure functionality and safety; 
  • Address urgent repair needs in wards, operation rooms, offices, and other rooms; 
  • Assess material needs and make requests for supplies such as wood, aluminum profiles, hinges, handles, locks, door closers, and sealants; 
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs, installations, and maintenance tasks; 
  • Work closely with the hospital’s maintenance, operation, and biomedical teams to support infrastructural projects;  
  • Collaborate with external contractors or technicians when necessary; 
  • Ensure all carpentry work complies with hospital hygiene and infection prevention protocols; 
  • Use protective equipment and follow occupational health and safety procedures.

Education and Work Experience Requirements: 
  • Proven experience (3+ years) as a carpenter, preferably in healthcare or institutional settings. 
  • Skilled in working with wood, aluminum, and metal materials. 
  • Highly experienced in using power tools (drill machine, router, sander, band saw, table saw, circular saw, reciprocating saw) 
  • Knowledge of different types of fasteners and their use (wood screws, masonry screws (tapcons), sheet metal screws). 
  • Knowledge of installation standards for hospital fixtures and fittings. 
  • Experience working in remote or low-resource settings is an added advantage. 
  • High level creativity and innovation.

  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair quickly. 
  • Physical strength and stamina.
