MIDWIFE CLINICAL MENTOR

Title of position: Healthcare Educator for Midwifery (Level 8)

Status of position: Regular Position

Location: MSF Academy at MSF Hangha Hospital, Kenema

Main Purpose:

The main objective of the Healthcare Educators is to ensure the facilitation, mentoring and implementation of the MSF Academy learning activities in the selected MSF projects in the country according to MSF’s protocols, standards and procedures and ensure the delivery of quality medical care for patients and their communities and improve the health condition of the population. 

 

The Healthcare Educator prepares, organizes and delivers learning activities in the clinical areas and trains the learners in the MSF projects as part of a continuing education process. The Healthcare Educator will also be required to propose adaptations to training content, to deliver and evaluate it, as well as to assess the acquisition of skills by the learners..

 

Main Responsibilities

 

  • Implements on the long-term clinical mentoring activities and tools, monitors MSF Academy Midwifery activities – in the projects, according to MSF protocols, standards and procedures (can involve various departments)
  • Participates in the Training of clinical Facilitators (TOF) and Training of clinical Mentors (TOM) as part of their induction
  • Provides active clinical mentorship to the assigned learners by facilitating mentoring sessions and providing side-by-side teaching to the learners based on the training objectives, the specific trainee needs and the material provided by MSF Academy, with largest percentage of time in the ward, coaching and training at the bedside
  • Monitors closely the progress of the learners and provides regular feedback to the L&D Midwifery Manager.  Performs assessment of learners using competency gap assessment 
  • Regularly visits the hospital and attends relevant meetings to collaborate with projects in implementing best practices taught in the curriculum
  • Plans learning sessions, support the project in allocating learning time and collaborate with L&D Midwifery Manager to update and share the chronogram
  • Keeps the database up to date, ensures proper storage of confidential learning documents and reports according to the L&D Midwifery manager’s instructions

 

MSF Academy

The MSF Academy for Healthcare aims to professionalize the training of health care workers in MSF projects. Midwifery care is one of the main priorities to health care provision. MSF has the ambition through professional medical training to bring a positive contribution to the Human Resources for Healthcare situation in Sierra Leone.

The curriculum is competency based and covers the Midwifery Curriculum. The training includes didactic classroom sessions and bedside mentoring.

Context Specific Responsibilities

 

  • Carries out supply management on the project (orders, follow-up of the stock, storage conditions, inventories, consumption, security of the stock, etc.) for the training activities
  • Contributes to the assessment of the transference of the learning in the workplace, using tools and methodologies in collaboration with the L&D manager for Midwives and Maternity nurses (including observation, reporting, questionnaires, learning portfolios).
  • Coaches, guides and supports the Midwives and Maternity Nurses and through their functions ensures good patient care practices as well as quality of care in the department providing guidance, on-the-job training, bedside support and essential feedback to all Midwives and Maternity Nurses in the department.
  • Actively identifies the nurses’ learning and development needs and brings them forward to the Learning & Development Midwifery manager.
  • Knows, promotes, implements and follows up on the universal hygiene standards/ precautions, bio-hazard prevention and infection control, security rules and other protocols and procedures in the medical premises and ensuring high standards of hygiene of his/her working environment. 
  • Works collaboratively with the L&D Midwifery Manager and gives continuous feedback / reports. 
  • Collaborates with national team supervisors on training needs for the department while also liaising with the L&D Midwifery Manager 
  • Respects patient confidentiality and works within a professional sphere of practice at all times
  • Consistently works towards their own personal and professional development. 

 

Requirements:

Education (essential):

  • Professional diploma/degree in Midwifery sciences
  • State Registered Midwife

 

Education (desirable):

  • Training of Trainer or any other pedagogy or education certificate/diploma is an asset
  • Any additional medical specialization is an asset

 

Experience (essential):

  • Five years’ experience as healthcare profession (if possible, in different services)
  • At least 2 years’ experience working as a Midwife in a hospital structure, including working in delivery room 

 

Experience (desirable):

  • Experience in mentoring, preceptorship, tutoring or clinical supervision
  • Experience in facilitation
  • Experience as a clinical instructor in university Midwifery programs / teaching hospital is an asset
  • Previous work experience with MSF or other international healthcare organizations is an asset  

Language: English, Mende, Krio

Knowledge:

  • Strong Clinical skills and knowledge on Midwifery care 
  • Anatomy and physiology knowledge
  • Pedagogical knowledge / Clinical Mentoring Methodology
  • Computer literacy (word, excel, PPT and internet)
