Overview
Around 760 million people worldwide still lack access to electricity, while approximately 2.6 billion people do not have access to clean cooking solutions. Access to affordable, reliable and sustainable energy is a prerequisite for social and economic development and for achieving the
Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Climate Agreement.
The bilateral programme “Sustainable Rural Development through Renewable Energy with Special Focus on Women-Led Enterprises in Sierra Leone (SURE)” promotes sustainable access to climate-friendly and demand-driven energy services for rural households, social institutions and MSMEs, with particular attention to women-led enterprises.
SURE promotes renewable energy solutions, productive use of energy, institutional capacity development, technical and vocational education and training, and an enabling environment for sustainable energy markets. The programme is co-financed by the European Union and implemented by GIZ in close cooperation with the Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Technical and Higher Education and other public and private partners.
The Intern supports the implementation of SURE activities from the programme office in Freetown.

- Responsibilities/Key Learning Areas
- Support day-to-day implementation of SURE activities.
- Assist in planning, coordination and monitoring of renewable energy interventions.
- Support preparation of reports, presentations, communication and visibility materials.
- Support stakeholder coordination with government, private sector and development partners.
- Assist in organising workshops, trainings and field missions.
- Support procurement, contract management and consultant coordination.
- Contribute to monitoring, evaluation, data collection and knowledge management.
- Support gender-responsive activities and women-led enterprise initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with GIZ rules and administrative procedures.

The Intern is located in Freetown:
- Support technical and administrative implementation of programme activities.
- Assist with reporting to BMZ, the European Union and other partners.
- Prepare meeting minutes, presentations and technical documentation.
- Support field monitoring visits and quality assurance of project activities.
- Assist in coordinating capacity development activities with TVET institutions, universities and the future Centre of Excellence.
- Support communication, documentation and visibility activities.
- Maintain electronic and hard-copy filing systems.
- Support recruitment and onboarding of interns where required.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by programme management.
- Other duties/additional tasks

- Required qualifications, competences, and experience
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree studies in Renewable Energy, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Science, Development Studies, Economics or related field. A reasonably equivalent qualification would be evaluated.
Professional experience
- Previous internship, volunteering or research experience in renewable energy, international development or project management is an advantage.
Other knowledge, additional competences ▪ Excellent written and spoken English.
- Good MS Office skills.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and in multicultural teams.
- Knowledge of monitoring, data analysis or communication tools is an asset.
- Willingness to travel within Sierra Leone.
