Medical Doctor for the Paediatric Training Program (MD)

 

Location: Lion Heart Medical Center, Yele, Sierra Leone

Start date: 1st October, 2024

Report to: The Medical Coordinator- Paediatric Training Programme

Duration: 6 months

 

Background:

In October 2021, Ministry of Health, Sierra Leone together with German Doctors (GD) started a specialized paediatric training program (PTP) for clinical officers at the School of Clinical Sciences in Makeni (SCSM). German Doctors and the SCSM closely collaborate in this project with two other international NGOs: CapaCare and Partners in Health (PIH), respectively responsible for the specialties surgery/obstetrics and internal medicine. 

 

For the Bsc Paediatric Training Programme (PTP) together with the Ministry of Health (MoH) and Makeni School of Clinical Sciences (SCSM) in Sierra Leone, German Doctors (GD) e.V. is looking for a Medical Doctor for the Paediatric Training Program (MD)

Position within the organisation

As a Medical doctor for the PTP program you will supervise and train the paedicatric training students in Lion Heart Medical Center, Yele, Sierra leone. You will work closely with the medical team on the ground, the GD medical program coordinator (based in Masanga), GD country representative in Sierra Leone and the GD administrative coordinator in Sierra Leone as well as the voluntary short-term paediatricians coming to Lion Heart Medical Center for short term missions. 

Key Responsiblities

  • Evaluate and monitor students’ progress and the training programme, support and supervise them as the contact in place (the medical doctor is responsible for daily supervision and clinical work, supported by short-term pediatricians if available).
  • Support the medical coordinator for the curriculum development/review, organise short-courses, support the selection of new students, and host international and national trainers. Supported by a medical core group. 
  • Support short-term deployment unit in Bonn with selection of voluntary short-term pediatricians
  • Joining the on call schedule in Lion Heart Medical Center and providing supervision on the wards
  • Any other duty as assigned by the project officer in charge

Additional responsibilities, if required:

  • Provide and support theoretical courses and skills training
  • Patient care (e.g. outpatient clinic and ward rounds, performing operations)

We are looking for

  • A Medical Doctor with medical education in tropical medicine and paediatrics, preferably with maternity experience (able to perform complicated deliveries and caesarean sections)
  • A minimum of three years of clinical work and previous relevant experience in working in low-resource settings is highly appreciated.
  • Experience in a supervisory role
  • Excellent (intercultural sensitive) communication, organisational and interpersonal skills
  • Stress resilience, flexibility and ability to multi-task in a challenging environment
  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken

We offer

  • A consultancy contract preferably from 1st October 2024. The duration of the contract is for 6 month on a fulltime appointment
  • A monthly allowance to cover expenses for (local) living, travel, insurances etc. conforming to NGO standards
  • Housing, one round trip flight
  • Based in Yele
