Title: Literacy Program Officer

Contract Type: full time

Location: Freetown, with possible trips outside Freetown.

 

Background

The Learning Foundation, Sierra Leone (TLF) is a non-governmental organization set up to promote good quality education in Sierra Leone. The organization’s focus is on improving literacy and life skills for primary and junior secondary school students. Our flagship project is the School Reading Club Project.

 

We provide various after-school programs to students in primary and JSS. These services include book clubs, remedial tutoring, and digital reading platforms. We also provide early literacy training and mentoring programs for teachers. We partner with other organizations in the provision of these services.

Vacancy

We are a seeking a Literacy Program Officer to be responsible for overall coordination of our educational programs and curriculum including working with our partners and schools to train teachers, manage after-school programs, as well as support financial and administrative reporting.

The Literacy Program Officer will report to the Program manager.

Key Functions and Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day coordination of the TLF reading clubs in program schools.
  • Train and supervise teacher librarians
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly progress reports
  • Ensure project activities comply with the policies and regulations of the organization.
  • Ensures close collaboration and coordination with cooperating partners
  • Monitor reading clubs and collect and report data on student progress
  • Support the program manager on the design and delivery of teacher training workshops
  • Employ resourcefulness in project design, implementation, and monitoring.
  • Trouble shoots project problems. Identifies and implements creative solutions.

 

Qualification, skills and attributes

  • Education: Diploma or degree in Language Arts, English, Library Studies or related field
  • Work Experience: At least one (1) year work experience, preferably at an NGO, or Educational setting.
  • Languages: Fluent in English
  • Other skills:
  • Experience training adults
  • Strong Background in Education and or project management preferred.

Great communication (written and oral) skills

Good computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite)
